Senator Russell's Yam Casserole

I got this recipe years ago while visiting my sister in North Carolina and I have made it every Thanksgiving since. I don't know who Senator Russell is, but he sure makes good yams!
3 cups mashed cooked yams
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter
2 eggs, beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
1/3 cup milk
Cream butter and sugar. Add the yams, eggs, vanilla, and milk and mix until smooth. Put in casserole dish and add topping.
Topping:
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup flour
2 1/2 Tbsp. butter
1/2 cup pecans
Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.
