President Hinckley's Cooked Whole Wheat
Joan Peterson
My mother's siblings, President Gordon B. Hinckley and wife, Aunt Marge, Uncle Sherman Hinckley and wife, Eileen and Aunt Ramona Hinckley Sullivan came for dinner and Family Home Evening every month or two for many years until, one by one, they departed this life.
The President came to dinner one evening prepared to share a breakfast recipe. This was a first!!!
The recipe had been given to him by his good friend, Elder Richard G. Scott, and he was now making it and enjoying it every morning.
He said, "Joan, you will want to write this down, I will wait for you to get a pen and paper," which I dutifully did. I then wrote each word as he dictated to me while we all sat at my kitchen table.
Quoted word for word:
"1/4 cup good whole wheat. Jane (daughter) took me to Welfare Square. Did you know you can buy whole wheat there? It is the best kind, I'm sure, and very inexpensive.
3/4 cup water
Pinch of salt
Boil at night 10 minutes. That's the secret.
Let it sit out with the lid on overnight. Make sure you turn the heat off, Joan.
In the morning boil it again.
Put Dole raisins in it, they're the best, and milk and a little brown sugar, or Equal.
Then sit down and find something to do, read ----read the paper, whatever you want but save plenty of time to eat it because you have to chew and chew and chew!!!"
