Brisket
Doris Brown
I received this recipe from an employee of a popular Salt Lake eatery! It's simplicity is only equaled by the savory sauce it makes as it cooks.
1 medium-sized beef brisket
1 pkg. Lipton Onion Soup Mix
1-2 jars "Homemade" brand chili sauce (round jar)
1 can regular Coke (sugar caramelizes and adds depth to the flavor of the sauce)
Put brisket in baking dish. Mix other ingredients and pour on top. Cover with foil. Put on a foil lined cookie sheet to catch possible drips. Bake at 350 degrees, covered, on the middle rack, for 3-5 hours. Add more liquid if needed at end of the longer baking time, but the longer baking makes the meat more tender and easy to pull apart. Pull meat into shreds with two forks. You can add more chili sauce after shredding to extend the sauce if necessary. It is delicious reheated the next day, or can be frozen. (If making two, in separate dishes, switch the dishes from top to bottom half way through.)
Serve with mashed potatoes, or on toasted buns.
