Carol's Hot Fudge Sauce

This is a favorite of our family and we have made it many times over the years.
1 cube butter
8 squares semi-sweet chocolate
4 cups evaporated milk (2 and 3/4 cans)
4 cups sugar
1 tsp. vanilla (add at the end, off heat)
Mix together and cook on medium heat, stirring occasionally until desired thickness. It takes up to 45 minutes. To thin it down after you've stored it or if you cooked it too long, just add more evaporated milk. It will keep for a few weeks in the fridge.
