Super Sloppy Joes

Andrea Hamilton

This recipe has become a family favorite ever since one of my sweet Relief Society sisters in Ohio made it for my family.  I think of her every time I make it. We also served this in September 2016 at our Relief Society activity on "Getting Organized" - we thought we were pretty clever serving "Sloppy Joes" at it .... this recipe definitely "sparks joy."

1 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
1 ¼ lbs. lean ground beef
¼ cup brown sugar, packed
2 to 2 ½ tsp. steak seasoning blend (I use Famous Dave’s Steak & Burger Seasoning)
1 medium onion, chopped
1 red bell pepper, chopped
1 Tbsp. red wine vinegar
1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 (15 oz.) can tomato sauce
2 Tbsp. tomato paste

Hamburger buns

Heat a large skillet or heavy pan over medium high heat. Add oil and turn pan to coat. Add beef to the pan, spreading it around the pan to break it up. Brown beef and drain away excess fat. Return beef to the pan and add brown sugar, seasoning, onion and red pepper. Reduce heat to medium and cook for 5 minutes. Add vinegar, stirring briefly to reduce. Add Worcestershire, tomato sauce and tomato paste, stirring to combine. Reduce heat to simmer. Simmer until flavors have combined and mixture has reduced (around 10 minutes). Serve on hamburger buns.
